The only diagnostic tool for a VAG motor is genuine VCDS not fleabay cloned cable.

The VAG-COM cable from Ross-Tech, there is no other real substitute. If you buy a cheap cable from ebay you won't get your money's worth!

There are pirated cables out there that will only work with 1 version of VCDS software and will not get the software updates that Ross-Tech does.

I'm a big supporter of Ross-Tech for the work they have done and continue to do. The cable is a bit expensive but they offer so much information, data, and tech support I do think it's worth it.

You can get a laptop and download INPA.

I'm shocked at the virtual monopoly that VCDS has. They are still the only option at their price. I've been hoping for years that new products would be introduced to compete with them, but I'm not aware of anything.

It's a niche market if you think about it. No competitors have come in because the cost is so high to do the software and Ross-Tech doesn't charge too much. It's more that I want to pay but it's not $1000. If it was you'd probably see some more competition.

It's a LOT of reverse engineering and R&D to do it though.
