Default New to VW. Open for constuctive suggestions

I'm new to this site. I just brought my first legal car and it will be on the road 5-29-09. It's a 1989 Volkswagan Golf GL 5 speed manual 160,000 miles. I've found a site where I can get a grille with no emblem cheap, and I found some HID headlights with the ballast on eBay pretty cheap too, but I don't know if I haveto change the headlight housing for the HID bulbs. I'm a mechanic, so I can do alot of the stuff I need to to myself. I don't know what kind of engine or rims to put on it though. I'm not putting anything bigger than 17's on it. It was a budget car ($500 budget) and I'm trying to make it a show/grip/powersliding car. Any suggestion on what kind of engine or rims I should get? Again, this is a budget car. I'm not trying to go that crazy yet with prices on parts. I've been looking at sone Enkei rims, but I want a set of rims with a lip on them. If you live in any US city and can remember the Golfs and Jettas of the 80's, that's the look I'm going for with this car. I'm trying to make it look like the cars I admired as a kid, and make it able to gobble up these crap Civics on the road. Please send me some good ideas if you have any.
