Default MPG dash indicator

I have an 04 Passat 1.8T/Auto and the digital MPG indicator is all over the map...Some of the numbers I like (85MPG) but that ain't happening. Could anyone please tell me the fix for this...
Thank you...This is a very handy site and thanks for letting me be a member.

I'm not sure about your model but on mine you can switch it between three different modes.

1. Instant mpg which shows the mpg depending on throttle position the reacts instantly which to me a total waste of time.

2. Current mpg where the figures are updated over a 150m of movement.

3. Overhaul average which the figures are updated over a 500m of movement.

Just in case there is a fault logged but not serious enough to put the MIL light on you really need to get a VAG-COM\VCDS scan.
