Default on going oil pressure problems tried all sorts, HELP!

hiya people ive recently bought a mk4 golf gti 1.8 20v turbo (aum) engine its a 2001 y plate done 90,000 miles service history up until 67,000 miles but i really need advice ive had low oil pressure light coming on and off for a about a month now but only when driven hard, i was told to replace oil pressure switch so done this and no problem for a couple weeks then started again ive had a new oil pump put in now but the mechanic has found alot of metal/aluminium filings in the sump (not good) the light still came on when back together he recomends i have the big end shells done now and get rid asap as he says he cant guarantee this will stop the low oil pressure light as the filings will probably already be in the oil ways and etc.. my question is do you think this problem will be on going after i have the shells done or should it stop? and also is it possible for the filings to be further than the sump seems theres filter systems that should stop these getting into the engine?? any help welcomed thanks
