Default 98 Golf rebuild

Hello everyone, this is my first post on a forum, but I do not think it will be the last. I recently bought 1998 Golf off of Craig's list from a guy who hit something on the freeway, and damaged the oil pan. He told me that he spilled oil all over the freeway, and the engine seized. So when I bought the car and a "new" engine with about 74000 miles on it for $2000.00. (Now mind you the car is also lowered 1.5 inches, and has front and rear sway bars, along with cross drilled rotors in the front, bucket seats and 4 point racing seats, along with some other minor details). I heard from a friend that VWs have an oil sensor and that they shut themselves off when they lose their oil, so I put a new oil pan on the old engine, and it started right up! The only problem is that car runs really rough, and has some sort of knock (I believe it might be a valve or some sort of bent rod) so I decided to pull the old engine anyway, since I have it just sitting there. Anyway, I am now the proud owner of my first VW, so I hope this forum will help in my routine maintenance, and with my engine swap.
