Question VW Lupo Integrated ABS rotor

Hello Forum,

I need some expert advice on the ABS sensor of the VW Lupo. I am working on designing an in-wheel module for a VW Lupo 1.2 TDi. We are basically trying to find out if we can put an additional powertrain (electrical) in the car. So the rear axle is being redesigned.

Since we want to keep the ABS, we decided to use the same sensor and so we need to count the number of teeth in the ABS sensor ring(re-programming the ABS controller for a new sensor is more laborious).

I did search for some information online, and did find links like the one below:

Sensor Ring, ABS, Rear Axle left and right VW Lupo (6X1, 6E1) 1.2 TDI 3L from Metzger - 0900096

But when I went to spare parts dealer, I was told that the ABS rotor ring is already incorporated in the wheel hub (integrated sensor ring). I found a link with the wheel hub.

Wheel Bearing Kit, Rear Axle Left Right VW Lupo (6X1, 6E1) 1.2 TDI 3L from Spidan - 27179

Can anyone tell me how the sensor detects the ring? And does that mean that the wheel hub cannot be disassembled? Or is the ring (showed in the first link) still required?

Thanks a lot in advance

You don't say what year this Lupo is but on a 1999-2006 they use the same sensor as shown in you first link.

Rotor for speed sensor Qty 2 - 1J0 614 149 - £15.72

If you Google this part number it fits other models as well.

Thanks a lot Keithuk....

The car is 2000 model. I initially thought the same like you suggested...The hub would look something like this :
VW LUPO 1.6 GTI 00-05 WITH ABS REAR WHEEL BEARING HUB KIT | eBay

It is the hub of a GTI, but I suppose it is the same. But then if why do they say "with integrated sensor ring" in the info over here :

Wheel Bearing Kit, Rear Axle Left Right VW Lupo (6X1, 6E1) 1.2 TDI 3L from Spidan - 27179

I guess it still requires that ring ?? Cant seem to find any pics wither of the rear hub with the sensor ..

Well I can only say what ETKA shows (see picture}. I've also checked on the Golf and they use the extact same part number.

The part number on eBay shows 6X0 598 477 - wheel bearing with assembly parts - £97.90 but thats the front hub.

If you would like ETKA PM me?

(1) The rears don't wear down NEARLY as much as the fronts. Maybe someone else can answer definitively how often you should change those; just check the pad level and that should be a good indication.

(2) Rears are also harder to do; compressing the piston afterwards requires a "specialty tool." The fronts are the easy ones.
