Default Red display

I have a 1999 Golf. My car has always had a strange problem in the "control panel" (I don't know how to call it in English). I mean the red leds display between speed meter and the rpm meter that indicates the temperature, average speed, consumption.
Sometimes the red leds are not so red, some even less red than the others, so that it is hardly readable anymore.
By experience I have noticed that this happens more when the weather is warm, when the car (which is black) has been under the hot sunlight, in the warm season.
The VW garage proposed me to simply change the whole control panel.
I wonder if there is a cheaper way to solve this problem.
