I agree with the guy who said that the German
made VWs are better: I owned a german-made 83 jetta
for over ten years, put over 240000 miles on it and
never had a problem aside from typical wear and tear.
Over the intervening years though the stories I heard
from Mexican-made Jetta owners were not as good. When
I got around to buying my next Jetta (95) I was
assured that the Mexican problem had been rectified. I
got the car and had been very happy with it. I got
rid of the 95 jetta recently. Why? Had to get an auto
car because my wife can't drive stick, so I got the
only car I could bear in an automatic--a new Beetle.
As we are leasing the Beetle I really don't care
what happens, as everything is covered for most of the
span of the lease.
