Golf TDi Chugging in all gears?
I have a golf 2004 TDI.
Recently I have experienced chugging. It is chugging sensation like it is in 5th gear going 15 mph except a little more extreme. It happens in all gears.
It is intermittent, sometimes does it sometimes does not.
When you get past approx 3000 revs it is fine but the car is still not at its full potential.
Sometimes the problem is temporarily 'fixed' by turning the engine off and on (usually when the engine has heated up a bit).
does anyone know what this could be?

bad fuel (too much water in fuel). at any autoparts store get a bottle of something like Heet brand fuel drier. just make sure it says on the bottle that it is ok to use in diesel. just dump it directly into the fuel tank.
fuel filter - change it out with a new one. not that tough to do, and relatively cheap as well, about $15 for the part, 30 min to do it yourself. pull the fuse or relay for the fuel pump out. start car and run it until it stalls out. jack up the car like if you were to take off rear passenger wheel (but leave wheel on), stick your head under car and with pliers, squeeze magic release button just to break the dirt that keeps it stuck, then using fingers, squeeze button and pull fuel line off from each end of filter, put new filter in, and reconnect lines. put fuel pump fuse/relay back in place, and turn key to on position, but not cranking the motor over for about 15 seconds, then turn car on all the way.
i used to drive a 1990 toyota camry and i would put arco gas in it. whenever it rained, the car would have issues accelerating below 2000 rpms, but when i switched to using shell or chevron gas instead, the problem went away immediately. that was water in the gas making my car run bad. despite the difference between gas and diesel, it sounds like it could be the same problem.

This sounds like the fuel lift pump in the fuel tank is starting to fail. This is a comon fault with VW PD diesel engines. Bad fuel can also cause this problem and also any fuel with bio diesel in it. the comment by smar969905 about the fuel filter only relates to petrols. the fuel filter for the deisel is located under the bonnet and only needs replaced if wrong fuel add or at service interval of 60k or 4yrs.
