When the car (a 2014 VW Passat 1.8 S Automatic) is in neutral, or when cruising (no acceleration), it sounds normal. However, when slowly accelerating and in gear it makes a faint almost humming noise. A VW dealer mechanic and a 3rd party German vehicle mechanic have looked at the car and don't know what it is. The dealer suggested the timing chain which was quickly ruled out by the 3rd party mechanic. The 3rd party mechanic didn't seem concerned about the sound but said to continue to try figure it out he would have to use some kind of listening ears (stethoscope?). I skipped it for now.

I've attached a sound file I recorded where you can hear the sound (it's faint). In it I'm driving very slowly through a parking lot. I'm accelerating and then letting go of the gas (I keep repeating the process). Any thoughts of what it could be?

I can't hear anything unusual in that MP3 file.

 

Sorry for missing that. Thanks for listening to the audio. This noise is driving me nuts and I've been to a ton of websites and watched a ton of videos trying to figure out what it is. . The noise I'm referring can be heard best around 7 and 13 seconds. It's like a regular thumping noise or something like that. Can you hear it?

 

Mine just died, no display what so ever, and you can hear the fan still running when the car is off. Does anyone know what other radio brand works well with a passat system.
