Default 2003 Jetta Brake Issues

Hi, I have a 2003 Jetta with a service light that came on. It is indicating that the front brakes need to be replaced. I replaced the front pads, and the light is still on. I called the dealership and they tried to tell me that the pads have a sensor inside the, which made no sense to me. The catch is now that i replaced the brakes, the brakes are worse than before. I tried bleeding the lines a little bit, but still no improvement. The thing is when i pump the brake a couple times and then stomp on it it brakes like hell. But if i just stomp on it without pumping them first they are not very good, and the rear brakes start to smell because they are doing all the braking. Now, does anybody know where the sensor for the front brakes is, or how the system works, or what could be wrong with the brakes. Could it be a caliper issue. Maybe more bleeing? any help is greatly appricitated.
