Well im 18 and im getting a 1971 superbeetle and im pretty excited to say the least, well because im geting a vw lol. The thing that sucks is i know virtually nothing about them, and i want to do some upgradeing and stuff but i dont know much about whats the best thing to do for best performance for the least amount of money. I would like to get some pretty decent performance out of it without going overboard or spending to much money. Does anyone have any suggestions about some parts i can put in or replace that would add some horsepower and torque? Any feedback would be greatly appriciated, thanks.

 

Before you get started you need to buy the book "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by John Muir (Amazon.com has it for pretty cheap). When you get the book turn to Chapter 18, Hi-Performance Modifications and thoroughly read it before you do ANYTHING! An air-cooled Beetle is kept cool by AIR and OIL. Hinder these two processes and you'll be rebuilding the engine!

Chapter 18 doesn't necessarily tell you what to do to get a lot of power out of the engine, but it tells you what happens with certain modifications. Usually to do one modification you need to do another to keep the engine temperature at an acceptable level. Do one without the other and you're facing problems.
