On the morning of September 21st Indians in six major cities were surprised to hear a strange voice. It took a while for most of us to realize what was actually happening. German car manufacturer, Volkswagen, along with one of India’s leading newspaper daily, Times of India, advertised VW Vento sedan in a completely new way.

On a specially printed first and last page, TOI had innovatively attached a small audio device with light sensor on its last page. Once a reader opened his TOI newspaper, the audio device started talking about VW Vento sedan! Probably this kind of advertisement was the first of its kind in the world.

There were mixed emotions amongst readers. Many found it amusing while others thought it as waste of money. But one thing for sure, people took notice as it was confirmed by VW India Head that there was a sudden rise in number of people calling in to inquire about Vento. It is estimated that along with the cost of device and page space, VW spent Rs 5-10 crores on this innovative advertisement.
