Tie Rod Ends or entire Control Arm?

Tie Rod Ends or entire Control Arm?
When I turn my wheel any amount i get a TERRIBLE screech that just sounds horrendous.
Any reason to replace the entire control arm instead of just the Tie Rod Ends? Figure I'll get the HD Tie Rod Ends from ECS.
Wondering if there is anyway to check now to see if it is indeed just the Tie Rod Ends and not something with the Control Arms also. Trying to skate buy for now as I don't plan on keeping the car for more then a couple years.
Also it needs brakes all around, and shocks/struts. I have coilovers for it though so I just need to fix the squeaky steering and the brakes.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Btw, it's a 98 Passat 1.8t b5, with about 92k miles on it.
