Recently the heater core started spewing on my 2003 Passat 1.8 turbo. The next time I started it it shut off immediately. It will start but not run. Something must have got wet and shorted but what??

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.
