Stereo Fault?

Stereo Fault?
My 2006 Passat's stereo seems to cut out if I go past 13-14 on the volume or if the bass is around the 2/3 high mark. I had an 07 and the stereo was awesome considering it was a stock system. Maybe the 07 had an amp and the 06 doesn't?
Perhaps a bad fuse or just an old stereo?
