Rusted out brakes
Hi I am new, and just looking for a little feedback/advice/solace....
I have a 2003 Passat Wagon, brakes have squeaked from the day I took it off the lot, I called the dealership on several occassions and was given multi reasons; "all new brakes squeak", "brakes will squeak in the rain", "brakes squak first thing in the morning", etc., etc., etc. Finally took it to (2) independent dealers(at @ 16k miles) and was told: my rotors were completley rusted out/ I should have them replaced asap/unsafe to drive/take it back to VW/brakes defective. After many trips/calls/letters to VW service, I was told my brakes were rusted out because I live on the ocean, and that this is common for the vws, the service manager stated he has seen it before, common. by this time, brakes were out of warranty. I just spent $1,600 out of pocket at my mechanic(not vw) to have all my rotors, pads replaced, and my mechanic confirmed his original opinion that the brakes were defective, and that the whole "living near the ocean" is pure BS. Any thoughts, thanks for reading |
RE: Rusted out brakes
$1600 for a brake job????? I know the above post is around a month old but OMG!!!! I had the same problem, all I paid was $700 for 4 rotors and brake pads installed including labor. I dont live anywhere near an ocean and my brakes were totally fried. VW was blowing smoke up your butt.

RE: Rusted out brakes
ok 1600... ridiculous
700... still pretty bad. ive never had my brakes done by someone else, i think the most i spent was 300, discs all the way around, new rotors and high perf pads. labor is what will really screw ya, but 1600 is completely crazy |
RE: Rusted out brakes
I know I would have saved about $400 if I had done it myself but being disabled makes it kind of tough.
