Default Rear Brake Pads on Passat

I was rotating tires on my wifes 2003 Passat, 4 Motion. The brake pads in the front do not look worn at all but the rear pads should be replaced now. The car has about 30K on it. Is this normal?
Any special tools required to replace pads? Can I use C clamp to compress the caliper back in??
Thank You, John
