Puzzling Passats
I’ve recently been interested in purchasing a used Passat. Considering a 2009. My mechanic advised me to make sure the timing chain tensioner has been replaced and that this motor is notorious for oil consumption. Should I be looking at the 2.5L? I heard that these are great cars and I don’t want to buy any problems, I’ve got an old X 5 to keep my mechanic happy. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks Mike |
Choosing a Passat your better of having a test drive with the type of engine you would like. Why are you suggesting 2.5?

Obviously I know very little about these cars. Just trying to get educated so I can get a good one. Thanks for responding |
As you can tell I’m a little ignorant on passats. Could you tell me if the 2012 2.5 has timing chain tensioner issues? Or anything to be concerned with at just over 100,000 miles. |
It depends on the engine code and whether its 2.5 5 cylinder or 6 cylinder V6.
e.g. Manufacturer: VW, Date(s) Used: 01/2011-07/2017, Model: Passat/4Motion/Variant, Engine Code: CBUA, 125Kw, 170PS, 2.5 Ltr, 5 Cyls, Remarks: SRE Bosch Motronic ME 7.1.1 or 17.5, Indirect Injection Manufacturer: VW, Date(s) Used: 01/2003-05/2005, Model: Passat/4Motion/Variant, Engine Code: BAU, 132Kw, 179PS, 2.5 Ltr, 6 Cyls, Remarks: Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) V6 Timing belt. |
