I have a 1999 passat v6 2.8L, I don't which sythetic oil I should go or regular oil is fine, and if I use synthetic oil, how many miles it can last? Please help

I've been running Castrol 5W40 on 5000 mile intervals here in the Phoenix AZ area. It gets very warm here - 105 today. Even though it's expensive it seems to me that it would be foolish for me to expect much more from it.....
