Default Malfunction Indicator Lamp

Have a 2002 Passat and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp is steady on. The manual says when blinking it is a catalytic converter problem. Because it is steady on should I consider this an immediate problem. It has to be driven 300 miles on Monday morning. Should I go to VW beforeor consider this is not a major issue? Thanks
