Default Engine Oil 2010 Passat 2.0T?

Manual says 5W-40, but if not available you can use 5W-30 both synthetic. The dealer uses 5W-30 (Penzoil Platinum). Is this OK to use rather than 5W-40?
The dealer changes it every 10,000 miles and I take advantage of the maintenance plan, but I change it myself once in between so it gets changed every 5,000 miles. Just curious about the viscosity.

yeah, 5w 30 is fine. I use that in my jetta. Although I plan on putting in 5w 40 because with 5w 30 i get lots of ticking noise from the engine. Your newer engine can go further with out an oil change. but mine i have to replace it every 3k to 4k.
hope this helps
