Default Direction Signal Problems

A few weeks ago my directional started making a rapid clicking/buzzing noise when I applied pressure to the signal lever. It would stop when the signal was completely on or off. Then it started making the noise even when the signal was off. The noise is coming from the center of the dash board, behind the radio somewhere. Today, there were times when the signals did not work at all when I put them on, and sometimes it did work fine. I do not want to take the car to the dealer to get fixed. Is this something I could do myself? What needs to be replaced? Thanks for your help!
