VAG Error Code: 16955/001393
EOBD II Error Code: P0571

Fault Location:
Brake Light Switch (F) - Circuit Malfunction/Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
Glow Plug Indicator Light (K29) active.
Brake Light(s) not working.

Fuse(s).
Wiring/Connector(s).
Wrong Brake Light Bulb installed (21W instead of 5/21W).
Brake Light Bulb(s) faulty.
Brake Light Switch (F) faulty.
Misadjusted brake switch.

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace Fuse(s).
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Check/Replace Brake Light Bulb(s).
Check/Replace Brake Light Switch (F).

Special Notes:
Brake Light Switches (F) have the reputation of breaking quite often.

When is the code detected?:
The P0571 codes is set when the brake light switch does not turn off even once the vehicle is driven.

Description:
When the brake pedal is depressed, the brake light switch sends a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). When the Engine Control Module (ECM) receives this signal, it cancels the cruise control.

VAG Error Code: 17087/001795
EOBD II Error Code: P0703

Fault Location:
Brake Switch (F) - Electrical Malfunction

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
Brake lights inoperative.

Wiring/Connector(s).
Brake Switch (F) faulty.
Misadjusted Brake Switch.

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Check/Replace Brake Switch (F).

Special Notes:
When found in Vehicles with Drive-by-Cable (DBC) the Brake Switch (F) is connected to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217). On older Models this Code is stored automatically after Terminal 15/Ignition is switched ON. If the Brake Switch (F) is OK you can avoid this Fault Code by pressing the Brake Pedal after switching on the Ignition and prior to checking Fault Codes. The Code should automatically be cleared then.
When found in Vehicles with Drive-by-Wire (DBW) the Brake Switch (F) is connected to the Engine Control Module (ECM) In this case you should check the Engine Control Module (ECM) for Fault Codes as well and the Data Bus Wiring/Connector(s) between Engine and Transmission Control Module (TCM) (J217).

Tech Notes:
Check if the stop light works with the brake pedal, if the brake lights are inoperative, replaced or adjust the brake switch.

Description:
Engine Control Module (ECM) detected accelerations and decelerations with no brake switch change.

VAG Error Code: 00526

Fault Location:
Brake Light Switch (F) - Circuit Malfunction/Open Circuit

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
No Brake Lights.

Brake Light Lamp: Left (M9) or Brake Light Lamp: Right (M10) malfunctioning.
Fuse(s).
Wiring/Connector(s) faulty between Brake Switch, Brake Lights and/or ABS Control Module (J104)/Brake Electronics Control Module (J104).
Brake Light Switch (F) damaged.
Brake Light faulty.

Possible Solutions:
Check/Replace Fuse(s).
Check/Replace all faulty Wiring/Connector(s).
Read Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).
Replace Brake Light Switch (F).
NOTE: The brake light switch must be adjusted exactly.
Check/Replace fuse(s).
Check/Replace Brake Light Bulbs.
Check Brake Light Switch (F) in ABS Measuring Value Blocks (MVB).

Special Notes:
Many Automatic Transmission Control Modules will show a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 00526 or 17087 that indicates a faulty brake light switch.
This can be ignored and will not appear if you press the brakes once before checking for Fault Codes.
