Advice on Passat needed
 

My brother has a 2001 Passat that has been trouble since he got it. He bought it from a small time dealer selling it as a private sale for around $4,000. Since buying it, he has put around $6,000 into it, and now it has more issues. The car has had an engine with 90,000 miles on it put in because the old one broke. It had a new heating coil, oil cooler, radiator, and front tires installed. Now the timing belt broke, and bent some of the valves. He had a few quote of a minimum of $2,000 to take it apart and fix it, but some mechanics have told him it's not worth fixing. So what should he do? Is it worth it to keep putting more money into it, or should he just try to get scrap money for it?

you could put more money into fixing the damaged valve train components and any other possible damage, and replacing the timing components, but you still have a used (non-rebuilt) engine with 90K. have you brother do some research and figure what he will likely have to put into the car in the future. the way I see it, I would have gone for a engine rebuild in the first place, timing belt should have been replaced before installing used engine if it wasn't ever done before. I would rather just pay for a rebuild of major components at this point. Oil pump (which is notorious for clogging), water pump, etc, etc.

I spent almost $3000 dollars after my timing belt snapped on my 01 Passat. It was worth it for me (I paid a grand for the car so I pretty much broke even) but after all the work he has put into it, I don't know if it would be more worth it for that. It all depends if he feels like keeping it or just getting a new car.

Yeah, actually it's worth deal to put money in this car. Because, Volkswagon passat is an amazing car so you must spent some money to ride again your passat.

your brother has problem with where he got that 90k engine from. If mechanic shop did the job they should know to replace timing belt components on that engine while was out off the another car.. No warranty on engine?
I mean buy the car for 4k+ spend 6k already and still not running right and Will you spend more?? Ehh It's a though call. If he going to drive that car for a long time it will pay back but try to sell it will loss some.

I think it's time to stop sinking money into it...and get a new mechanic.
