91 octane

91 octane
I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but what are the ramifications of putting in 87 octane into my 04 Passat V6? The manual states it requires 91 octane. Is it as simple as not running well or will it cause long term serious problems.
Thanks in advance.

RE: 91 octane
not sure about the long term results but i know for sure it will run like crap from it, i have a friend who was dumb enough to buy a supercharged xterra and then be cheap enough to not buy the required 91 octane and he kept complaining that it was running bad, well once i pointed out that his car requires 91 and being SC it really needs the good gas he switched back and it runs much better but who knows if itll effect it long term.
Have you already done so or are you thinking about doing it?

RE: 91 octane
In Utah, the Octane levels are different, like we have 90 88 85. We are almost a mile high, so I guess it doesn't matter here. I can run a mid-grade in my VR6, it doesn't hurt it, but I know a poiwer difference betweeen octane levels. If you use a regular gas treatment, shouldn't affect anything major.

RE: 91 octane
Thanks! I bought the car used a few months ago and really didn't know it was suppose to take 91 octane until recently. I did notice a "delay" when I stepped on the gas that isn't really there anymore since I switched. I was hoping I did not due any serious damage.
