2013 Passat SE manual - gear shift indicator?

Hi Everyone!

I noticed a gear indicator in the TDI SE when I test drove it, but somehow don't see it on my gas model. Does it need VCI config, or is it already there and I don't see it?

It will depend on what is fitted to your model, Does it have an HighLine MFD display?

I had the same problem with mine when I bought it. I checked the spec in the brochure and it said the GTD should have the digital gear indicator on the MFD. I took it back to the dealer to have it enabled but they couldn't do it. They said I could have an older MFD that doesn't show this.

I Googled around for a while about this and one user said his wasn't showing so he took it back to the dealer to get it fixed. It appears there is a software update that enables it so his was fixed.

I went back to the dealer with this info and they checked it again. There is a software update which they installed now it shows in the MFD.

This can't be anabled with VCDS.

Thanks Keith... I'm not sure what a 'HighLine' MFD is, but if the 2013 Passat SE has it, I'd think mine should too.. I will look in the manual to see if it specifies this, and let you know what I find.

Shift indicator to adjust the recommendations, in order to adapt to the current driving situation. When you accelerate strongly, it allows the engine to achieve the the recommended shift before the higher engine speed. By helping you change the gear shift indicator at the appropriate time, will lead to a significant reduction in fuel consumption, and to ensure the integrity and smooth power development.

You are spot on regarding the VCDS limitation. Many owners assume coding can unlock everything, but actual firmware version mismatches on the instrument cluster are a different beast entirely. It is great that you pushed the dealer to check for that specific update—service centers often miss those bulletins unless you hand them the proof.

This situation actually reminds me of the importance of proper feature validation in software. I work with https://topdevs.org/services/mvp-development, and we emphasize that core functionalities—like your gear indicator—must be verified early in the MVP scope to avoid these exact post-launch frustrations. Glad you finally got it sorted!
