Default 2003 Passat

I just bought a 2003 VW Passat from a car dealership and love the car. However, we found out that the heater coil is no good and the hoses had been disconnected and bypassed. This info was not revealed but when we tried the heat at the dealership it was such a hot day that it felt warm coming out and we thought it was OK. Obviously not. Gonna call in the a.m. and find out what they knew and what they will do, but if nothing, does anyone have any idea what kind of cost I will be looking at to have the repair done? Do-it-yourself is out of the question from looking at the Haynes manual and seeing what it requires.

Heater core, not coil. Also, anyone know if VW of America will make any allowance for repair due to recalls in the past for the same problem?
