2001 Passat 2.8 - Stuck Engine Block Drain

I can't get my engine block drain (Hex head next to the bell housing) to come loose.

Any ideas on freeing it up? I'm reluctant to apply too much heat to that area (Aluminum)

If I go ahead without removing the drain, can I still get a decent flush?
