Default 2000 PASSAT Check Engine light on

My check engine light came on 3 days ago and stays on. on the dash message thing its same EMISSIONS WORKSHOP. what does that mean?? My friend told me that she knew someone with a 2006 Jetta and that everytime she let her gas run to low the check engine light would come on and she'd have to take it in to get it reset. everytime they said it was because of the gas... any suggestions??

well i know its not because of gas, mine is always on but thats my fault, but anyways, you should get it checked out, you can go to a lot of auto parts stores and they can do that for you, i have an 01 passat and my codes are secondary injection system and n75 valve code and an overboost code but anyways let me know what you find and ill figure it out.

Hi,
my '02 passat had the same problem, bought a scan code reader (£40), checked for splits/cracks in the air intake ducting, crankcase breather hoses and vacuum lines. Found a split in a branch off the main air duct (after the MAF sensor, before the throttle body, which goes to camshaft cover and down to the crankcase). I taped up the split (plastic gets quite brittle over time), deleted the code with my scan tool and the engine check light has never come back on again. If you find no splits and cracks then you may have a faulty oxygen sensor, my car has 2, one before and one after the cat.

Hope this helps
