1.6 L 1999 B5/3B2 Transmission and erratic engine.

Hi All.

I've hit a wall.
I've had a lot of weird errors, which I now have narrowed down to 1 error stored and another not stored.
I believe there's 2 error, but not sure.

Engine is fair at idle, but bogs just a tad.
Everytime it goes "umpf" there is a "tick" somewhere behind/beneath the throttle body.
So, does the "tick" cause the "umpf" or vice-versa?
What could be the issue.
(when in gear, the engine is at lower rpm, and much more erratic)

(worse)
Also I have 00297 Mechanical failure, Gearbox Speed Sensor (G38)
It does not shift in Drive, stays in 3rd gear.
I can reset the error (only when driving) and the transmission works as expected, but the error comes back in a short while.
Sometimes with a fairly big "Klunk" from the rear.

I've had G38 out, and measured 798 ohms, which should be OK.

Now comes the weird thing.
Beside the plug for G38 is a similar plug.
These can be interchanged.
I'm pretty sure the other 1 goes to G68 (Engine???) Speed sensor.
If I unplug that, the RPM's is still showing.
(I haven't driven it yet)
No additional errors in ECM.

I would think the RPM should go zero.
Is that correct?
Or would it be the speedometer not working?

Is the problem, that G68 is bad, and the plugs are incorrectly put together?
Would the also result in the erratic engine?

(G38 and G68 should be the same PN, as far as I know)

Other things done:
Changed transmissionoil 3 times. (removed 00293 F125 multifunction switch error, dash showing wrong info)
Replaced oxygen/lampda sensor. (removed 00537 Lambda No signal error)
Replaced ignition cables.
Repaired wiring inside throttle body. (removed 00516 Closed Throttle position Switch F60 error)
Fuelrail and injectors removed and cleaned.
Checked for intake leaks.

If anyone can info me what engine I have, that would be much appreciated.
(ARG, AFY, APT, ADR, AEB, whatever)

VIN

Thanks

Update

10 km drive with G68 sensor unplugged.
No change, except when I reset the error it reappears within 1 second.
So there is a problem there, either sensor or loose connection.
Question then remains:
Is the plugs switched or is my iCarsoft giving the wrong readout?
(and will it correct the erratic engine)

Update 2
Bummer.

Pulled the G68 Engine Speed Sensor, which is faulty.
(overload, no connectivity)
It is the same as the Gearbox Speed Sensor.
New one in.

Error 00297 is gone but 2 new errors. ;
00281 Mechanical Failure, Engine Speed Sensor (G68)
Which is weird, as driving with the failed unplugged, didn't error.
So why error with a new one?
The wiring is not great, so that might be it.
(did measure the wiring though, before assembly)
And:
00652
Adaption limit (Mul) exceeded, Gear Monitoring.
Dash is showing the right info.

It's not very keen on shifting, not even in manual.

I'm getting pretty annoyed with this thing. :)
