Windshield-1998 Jetta GLS

At the bottom of the windshield is a rubber piece that deflects the water from running all the way down the windshield and into another drain. I this piece is compromized due to age and all the water runs down the windshield into the first compartment wil it leak into the car or mess with any of the electrical parts? I have posted a picture.
