weird sound in engine

there is a constant ticking sound in my engine. i have a 2000 vw jetta 2.0L5 speed. My auto teacher said it could be a flat cam and a friend said injector going out. my fuel milage has been getting worse over the past couple of weeks. Also a friend said ahydro lifter is going out. Any other suggestions?? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

More than likely a lifter but, if your mpg is getting worse I would look at the injectors first. Try running a full bottle of Seafoamin about 3/4 of a tank of gas. That will clean the entire fuel system especially the injectors. Also put 6 oz of Seafoam in your oil. That will free up sticky valves and lifters and clean any build up in the engine. If that doesn't fix things you will have to take off the intake manifold to look at the injectors which also gives you the opportunity to check your cam clearances.

either your low on oil and they are starving for oil. or they are going bad. if the clicking goes away when you start to rev the motor then its the oil if it gets worse they are bad and are goin to need replacing soon. as for the overheating that is the thermostat. it needs replacing now depending on the year make and model of the car this is a fairly easy task and only takes an hour or so.
