Smile how to fix NO REVERSE on Jetta transmission

Have a 2004 Jetta GLS Turbo. 150,000+ miles. Everything works, except recently, and sporadically, would not go into reverse. Sometimes, after warmup, would reverse. Then, eventually, no reverse at all at any time. Dealer wants $6000 for new, Trans shops want $3000+ for used. I found a small trans shop that took apart trans (even though its sealed), and eventually determined that the REVERSE LOCKOUT SOLENOID needed to be replaced. Trans put back together, with new part...I GOT REVERSE! YIPPEE!

Anyone have any ideas as to1) how much would it cost me to get all parts I need for this (fluid, filter, gasket, any other thing I may need for this that I am forgetting to mention here) and2) my plan b: take it to the mechanic and have him do it (I'll give him everything he needs) how much would be a fair offer to do so? 40 or 50 bucks? I am simply guessing it won't take more than an hour to do so.3) what I am trying to avoid (basically getting ripped): how much would a VW dealer charge for this if I had no other option and they probably wouldn't accept me buying the parts somewhere else.4)what about transmission issues with the reverse gear? is this something common? I am on the right track by assuming that I simply need a transmission fluid or is this symptom indicative that my transmission will ultimately die of some unknown cause.I'd appreciate some help with this matter.best wishes

1) Parts will cost what they cost locally depending on where you live and where you go. I.E. Dealer / Parts Source etc
2) Labor varies, but if your changing fluid(s), typically $40 with all your fluids and parts. Maybe less if they need the money, (30$).
3) Dealer would charge atleast $100 minimum.. or you could always pick up the phone and ask them for free rather than most of us who try to avoid the dealer at all costs
4) I dont know if reverse tranny gone is common; but it looks like it via this thread

So if anyone has had this same problem and found a fix other than replacing the transmission that would be great. Thanks
did you get your issue resolved? just wondering we are having same issue

First posts normally go in introductions else you could get a free fix and we never see you again!!!

First thing to check is the clutch hydraulics bleed the clutch. You must have the brake reservoir topped up as the clutch feeds of the pipe at the top.

I'm so glad that I found a dedicated Volkswagen! now I see that Volkswagen fans have a lot! Previously, I only read the history of creating Volkswagen logo, and now I can live with the fans of this car.
