Default Tire Pressure

Just bought a new set of Continental 225/45 ZR17s for my '03 Jetta 1.8T, and the installer insisted the correct tire pressure is 45 psi. I previously had a set of Goodyear Eagle OEM tires, inflated at around 35 psi and got about 50K miles before they wore out. The sidewall on the new tires says "51 psi maximum", but I'm not comfortable running these tires so close to max inflation pressure. Anyone have some advice here?
