to and from synthetic oil!
hi everyone! iv got a question. about 2 oil changes ago i switched to synthetic oil on my 00 jetta glx and recently went back to regular oil. is it a bad thing to go from synthetic to regular oil? a friend of mine said it was and i would really like to know to determine weather i shud change it back or not. (my exhaust did smoke a little after though)

RE: to and from synthetic oil!
When synthetic oil was first introduced, it would have been
a bad thing to swap around, However the Gov, made the
oil companies make the synthetic stuff compadable with the
good ole oil, you can even mix it together now if you wish.
With all the studies going on(not by the makers of synthetic)
but by independent labs, some synthetics are not synthetic
at all but have a synthetic additive. Other synthetic oil don't do any better than regular oil. Synthetic gear lube for
trannys and differentials work great and is a lot better. They still have a long way to go on the synthetic engine oil
to make it better than the old stuff. Synthetic will clean
the engine a little better, that's why your engine smoked a
little when you changed back, it will stop that after using
regular oil for a while. So far i've known of a few vehicles
that bit the dust using synthetic, I would be careful ,
unless the owners manual said to use synthetic only.
