starting problems 2011 jetta

2011 jetta SEL NOT STARTING WHEN THE MORNINGS ARE COLDER. THE MESSAGE SAYS "IGNITION SWITCH OFF". ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS HAPPEN BEFORE?

dealership said the starter is bad, over $400 to replace, thank God for an extended warranty... the car only has 51,000 miles. VW isn't what it used to be
