Starting Noise

Hey again, i have a question about my 2001 1.8T. When i first start my car the engine has a soundkinda like an air leak in a hose but stops when the engine warms up, only lasts about 2 minutes. Is this a normal thing or do i have a problem? I just noticed it when i walked out of my car when it was warming up. I noticed a Bug did the same thing when it started to so thats why im curious. Thanks.

RE: Starting Noise

The noise you describe doesn't seem bad, I guess. Sometimes when I start mine at anytime, not just morning, it's almost like a grinding noise for about 2-3 seconds. Doesn't do it all the time, I'm not totally concerned.

As far as your noise, is your motor losing power? Sounds maybe like coolant bypass since your thermostat isn't opened yet. My mustang sounded kinda like that, hi-pitched noise not real loud, I tried listening and it was just coolant bypassing since thermo wasn't hot enough to open for the motor.

Does it do it all the time? Every morning, or just when the motor is cold?

No my motor runs fine and there isnt any loss in power at all. It only does it when it hasnet ran in a couple days or so, and when the temperture outside is below like 40. It only lasts a few minutes and i can hear it shut off, its weird it sounds exactly like an air hose leaking,i just wanted to know where the air sound was coming from, and your probably right.I mean its been doing it awhile im sure and i havent felt any difference in power. If its nothing serious im not going to spend a bunch of money on it.As for your noise in your car mine did the same exact thing and it ended up being the starter. have you checked that? But i dont know just a thought. Thanks

Ya know starter makes sense...but it always starts so not a big deal. But yea I dunno what hose would be leaking air only for a short time. Have you asked the dealership near you? They usually hear a lot of weird stuff like that and usually have asnwers, at least ours does by me.

Foreign Aid huh? What kinda stuff do you guys do there ive never heard of it. I would love to bring it up tommorow but my Jetta is in my home town right now. I appreciate you offering to look at it for free, that would help out alot. Maybe when i gohome and get myJetta back ill swing it by real quick one of these days. If one of the hoses were off like you were thinking how big of a problem is it? Does it hurt anything? Thanks man.

Hey Jrail...I personally don't mind you letting people know where you work, or offereing services. If oppcha lives by there, then it helps him out and it gets his car fixed, that's what we should do as VW owners and mechanics, help each other out. Just be careful avout advertising prices on threads, or certain offerings, might want to keep that to a PM.
By the way, I work on Hill AFB, Layton......I know Lots of people who have Audis and Jettas on base......
