speedometer and tach not working. need help!!

speedometer and tach not working. need help!!

i have a 1999 vw jetta wolfsburg edition. the speedometer and tach work occasionally. when they dont, the needle on the tach wiggles down at 0.
any ideas as to what could cause this and how to fix it?

If it is working occasionally you've probably got a loose connection or a short. Is your Jetta an MKIII (99) or a MKIV (99.5)?
