RPM's

This is my first post on this forum. I just had a question. I have a 02
Jetta 2.0. When im in the highway on cruise control around 70mph at 5 gear, my rpm's are at 4000. It feels if i could go for another gear, but i just have 5. Is this normal? Will it affect if a run it for long distance like this?

Thanks for the help

Yeah, are cars could definitely use a 6th gear. 4,000 rpms is probably normal. I hit 4,000 at 80 but, even though we have pretty much the same car you have a different engine code and transmission. There are so many different transmission codes between '00 and '02 and they mostly all have different gear ratios. So your trans is probably geared for better acceleration. I can tell you that my car was painfully slow in stock condition.

i also have this problem and i was told it's just the car itself. At about 80mph i'm around 4k rpm.

is there nothing that could be done to fix that? cause i have never seen such a bad transmission on a car as my '00 2.0 jetta lmao.

You could do a 6 speed conversion for $5,000. That's it. If they weren't geared like they are they would be unbelievably slow. I can't complain now that I've juiced her up a bit. I'm still getting around 25 mpg with a pretty even mix of highway and city and I drive like I'm in a grand prix.

judging by your sig tho, doesn't seem like you did much. i did intake/exhaust too and i know it helped, but i still hate driving it at 4k rpm on the highway lol. to me it feels like to much stress on the engine especially long ass drives...

but $5000 no thank you lmao, thanks for the info tho, helped me out a bit. I'll prolly sell this thing sooner than later =]. Back to the m3!

What's with the insults there clash0901? And did you mean to call me a lamo or was it a lmao? I guess I could take up the whole page listing everything I've done to it. What else do you suggest I do to it? I would also like for you to explain to me how adding exhaust and intake lowers rpms I'm very interested in this..

i was definitely not insulting you at all. i was simply stating that you juiced her up a bit and i don't think it's gonna be fast still but i could be wrong. if you have unlisted mods then i will eat my foot for now lol. and i wouldn't call anyone lame or ever argue over the internet, so it was lmao.

No, it is definitely not what I would consider fast but, compared to stock it is much faster. I'm going to drive up to Kansas City next month to put it on the dyno and get a GIAC chip put on so I guess I'll have some hard numbers then. I know stock it has a big 90whp. If I ever come up with a spare $2,500, Neuspeed makes a supercharger that gives you a 50% hp increase and a 55% increase in torque. Then I'm afraid it would be fast. In retrospect i wish I would have held out for the 1.8 turbo but, I got such a good deal on mine I couldn't refuse. And I'm not hip on texting abbreviations so I don't know what lmao means. I guess I'm getting old.
