Replace Engine??

I have a '00 V6 Jetta and need to replace the engine if I am to continue with the car. The car only has 95,000 miles and is in good shape otherwise. The engine is fried due to the oil pan plug coming off and the car being run without oil. Question is -- do you think it is worth replacing the engine for a car 6 years old and worth only about $6000 if the engine will cost me about $3000?? Are there problems in replacing the engine that could result in more problems later with the car? Need your thoughts! Thanks!

RE: Replace Engine??

I have to ask why the oil pan plug came out in the first place. Who changed the oil last? And didn't you see the blinking oil light before it seized? To answer your question, no. It's not worth it. $3000 repairs on a $6000 car is like a $50 repair on a $100 watch, you would just buy a new watch. I have a 2000 Jetta too and I wouldn't change the engine. I'd sell it for parts and get a newer one. Take your $3000 and put it toward a new car.

RE: Replace Engine??

plug was cheapie that Jiffy Lube stuck on when they stripped the threads on the original. Car ran over a high driveway and the plug was dislodged. Oil drained while car was parked. Wife started it up saw the oil light flashing, checked the oil and claimed she saw oil on the dipstick. She then drove a half mile before it seized. Needless to say, she is not an automotve expert and may be an ex-wife before long!

wow I hope she reads that..

At least she got out the check the oil.. Most would just drive off...

ALthought it is really hard to miss the terrible noise the engine would be making..

OR

The GINORMOUS puddle of oil.. all over the place.
