Question about the NEW Jettas (05-07) 5th Gen

I currently drive a car that is around 120HP, it is fine I don't mind that it is slow (it actually helps when it comes to speeding!! LOL), but I hear the 1.9TDI is only 100 horsepower!! That sounds very low, I read that the top speed (which means you can't push it that hard LOL) is 116MPH. Now that is rather low. Does anyone have the newer Jettas in a 1.9TDI? If so, what is your take on the speed and when you hit the gas and stuff.
Also, Stock is the 2.5, it's a little more expensive (only about 2K which raises only 40 dollars a month more or less), is it worth it to get that car, at 150HP?
What about the 2.0 verison, with I believe it's 115HP, is it any good?
I am in love with these Jettas and I want one bad, I don't want a car that is FAST to the point I will be doing 60 in a 30 and get tickets! I just want to feel the power.
Would 100HP be too little??
Is it worth getting the 2.5???
How does the car handle?

Everyones opinion about the cars are going to be different. The best solution is to contact your local VW dealer and take those models for a test drive and find out what one you like best.

Hay abcd4lyf,

The horsepower rating for diesels is a little misleading. I think mine is 90. Diesels generate lots of torque, but not a lot of horsepower - that's why you have a turbo. I've not driven the new ones, but you have plenty of power to get speeding tickets even with 100 HP. Not incredibly fast off the line, but really good pickup from 40 to highway speeds. I've had mine over 110 mph with plenty of room to go.

Drive some and post what you think.

The 2.0 version is awesome. Don't forget that it's a 2.0T, which means that it is a turbo charged engine. Also, it has 200 horsepower, not 115. I suggest you go to your VW dealership, drive a 2.0T and a 2.5, and if you want a fun car with a little power, the 2.0T is the way to go, way more fun than the 2.5. Don't be misled by numbers, 2.5 > 2.0, but that T makes a big difference!!! The 2.0T is reminiscent to the Audi A4. The 2.0 is a I4 engine (as opposed to the I5 2.5) and it's slightly more fuel efficient than the 2.5. It's also slightly more expensive, but it's worth it :) I highly recommend it in the 6-speed manual. Just brought mine home tonight from the dealership and I love it :)

I would get the 2.5. I had 92 Jetta GL with 1.8L, 5 speed. I think it had about 95 or 100 horse power. It wasn't bad getting it going, but with AC running, I had to run rpm to 2700-3000 to shift up in order to go fast. Assume auto would be slower. It was real fun driving 5 speed. I like the new 2.5L. I would get the auto, 5 speed tiptronic. I had the triptronic auto in my 99 Audi A4, and was very pleased with auto transmission performance. Sure, I like to get the GLI, but insurance cost $40 more a month, have to use Premium gas which costs 30 cents more a gallon, and I don't know about 6 speed stick -- too many gears to shift I think. Besides, VW/Audi automatic transmissions are fast, get up and going.

Sugguest you test drive the TDI to get the feel for it.
