Question about gas tank...

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum...so I have a '00 Jetta. Just recently when I pulled in to a gas station to put gas in my car, I started pumping and the gas started spitting back out of the gas tank hole onto my hands and the pump....then the other day I tried pumping gas and it was fine except I noticed that it was spilling out underneath my car...I thought maybe I had a hole in my gas tank except when I'm driving my gas gauge is fine and normal and doesn't go down quickly, and when the car is parked it does not leak any gas underneath.....I'm super confused...any ideas???

RE: Question about gas tank...

If I pump too much gas, it has no where else to go so it dumps from under the car. As far as coming back through the filler tube, just sounds like you're pumping too much gas, which can actually hurt your vehicle. They did a news special where ppl got more gas mileage not filling to the brim, and just filling til it stops.

hmmm...i dont think this is it because when i pumped both times, I was on empty...and i dont usually fill it...i usually fill it to its at about half a tank...this problem has been going on for some time now...

so if you pump to a half a tank it spills out from the tank?? I dunno bout that, could be float problem. Can you pump a full tank into the tank??

RE: Question about gas tank...

There is a chance your gas gauge is off. My 95 jetta gas gauge is all messed up. Runs out of gas befor it is on empty but i could pump all day long and the gauge never goes to full.
