Default Putting Diesel engine in 1987 Jetta GTI

I've been driving my 1985 Golf Diesel with the 1.6L I-4 Diesel engine for several years now. The engine was replaced in 1996 and it has around 60,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, the frame has rusted to the point that the CV joint has rusted completely from the subframe cross member, and it is no longer safe to drive.

Recently I purchased a 1987 Volkswagen Jetta Mk2 with a gas engine on craigslist with some engine problems for $500. The frame, suspension, and body are very solid.

Does anybody know if I can take my relatively new diesel engine and put it in my Jetta? Is this a hard transition?
