Problem with 2001 1.8T Jetta

Hello all,

I took my 2001 Jetta (1.8T) to a local car shop for multiple check-engine codes. I was told that the dip-stick tube was broke and caused the oil to splatter all around. Bottom line he made me spend $1200.00 to replace secondary air pump, a bunch of vacuum hose pipes, the 4 spark plugs and one ignition coil.

I got the car back earlier today and when I tried starting it was cranking. I thought I should drive it for another day before taking it back. No such luck - by evening the car did not start (gives a cranking noise, but does not start). I got the car towed.

The car shop was closed by the time I went and the guy did a quick visual inspection and thinks that it could be a bad alternator or a bad battery. He thinks this is just a co-incidence and nothing to go with the fix he did. He said that he will test it tomorrow and give me the details.

My questions:
1) Could it be possible that this new problem is a co-incidence and not related to the fix he made.
2) If it is a bad alternator, how much am I looking at?

I am not a car guy and further expenses are really going to hurt me. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.
