Oil Filter Screw Cap

I have a 2008 Jetta SE. I discovered an oil leak that appears to come from the screw cap on the bottom of the oil filter canister. I've changed the oil many times, but never removed the cap. My mechanic removed the cap from the canister and thinks it's the source of my leak. He cleaned the cap, applied some kind of black sealer on the threads, and then reinstalled the cap.

Is there supposed to be a gasket or o-ring that prevents leakage? When removed, there was no o-ring or gasket on the cap.

A couple of days after posting the above, I went to my local VW dealer and asked the same question regarding the gasket/o-ring to a guy in the parts department. The parts guy printed a copy of the oil filter and canister from his computer and then he told he has no other information. He also said the mechanics don't bother with the screw cap. Needless to say I was disappointed with the answer.

Yes, there's supposed to be an o-ring that goes with the filter. You should get it with the stock one from the dealer OEM VW Parts - OEM Volkswagen Parts Online | VWPartsVortex.com

filter o-ring

JettaJenn,
Thank you for the reply. I have changed the oil many times and always purchased an after market oil filter. In all cases, an o-ring for the canister was included, but not an o-ring that fits the oil filter screw cap. By your comment, it seems that a VW filter, rather than after market, would include this smaller o-ring. Is this correct?
