Default My New Jetta! What is this thing in the engine?

Hi,

So I just bought this used 97 Jetta. I just noticed this cracked rubber tube in the engine today. I've only driven it twice since I've gotten it. The owner is saying he doesn't know anything about it. He says the only major thing wrong with the car is that the heater core is broken.

Anyone know what this broken tube is? How bad is it? Is it safe enough to even drive it to the shop to get it checked out? It seems to be leaking some type of fluid.

Check out these photos:

I have more pictures if this is unclear.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Please have a look at them here:

That plastic hose goes to the PCV(crankcase pressure regulating valve).
I bought mine on this website http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volks...a/Engine/158/3

Is it easy enough to replace myself or should I take it to a shop?

Is it even safe to drive it to a shop with this crack?

yeah... is easy to replace. You could wrap it with like ducktake for now, 'til you get that new plastic hose. That part that goes to the PCV, is just a short rubber hose and is attached to the plastic hose that goes down. I did it by myself. It takes about 5-10minutes to replace. Is not a biggie.
Let me know if you need more help...
