Default MIL/ Check Engine Light

I have a 2003 Jetta GLS model with 60K miles on it. I have taken the car to the dealer to have it reviewed for the Check Engine light. I was told that the thermostat and the two sensors needed to be replaced. I have done this a total of three times. If the dealer is telling me what to do and the light comes back on two weeks later again and again; doesn't this mean that there is a problem and I should contact VW directly instead of dealing with the dealer? Is it possible that I am going to have to leave the light on and figure that the electric system is a lemon? I understand replacing the electronic board/system is thousands of dollars! I just paid the VW off! I love the car, its ride and handling but the electronics are a pain.

Please help!

If the car is running well(no overheat, no loss of power) don't worry.
I have this light on for more than a year and nothing is happening.
Make sure the light is off before going on a smog check.
