Default Looking to buy a jetta

Hi, I just joined because Im looking at purchasing a new car... my jeep is old and its about time... anyhow, I have a few worries because even though i like the car, i have herd horror stories about them and how much it cost to fix them and that they are always in the shop... i would be purchasing a used one from a local dealer....

can anyone give me their opinion as to whether this is a car that is reliable and that wont have me in the shop every week??? what are some of the most common issues with this type of car??

thanks!

It depends on the year and miles and how well it has been maintained.
I have a 98 TDI and i love it. Has 180K and I have had to replace front wheel bearings and some other things but they mostly relate to mileage and poor maintenace by the pervious owner.

I have had 2 diesel VW's. 78 Rabbit and 98 Jetta. 2 best cars I ever owned.

make sure it is not a 5-speed automatic transmission. b/c if a problem occurs, it will cost a lot of money because a big part (engine or transmission) will have to be replaced. ask if it has an integrated system? meaning if one things breaks, they are all connected, and consequently other parts will be damaged too.
