Default Jetta stalling

I have a 1986 jetta gl 1.8L It starts up and I can drive it or idle it for about 20 minutes then It just stalls out. If I wait 5 or 10 minutes it will start again and I can go for another 15 or so minutes. I just replaced the fuel pump but it does the same. Any suggestions?

pre pump in the tank might not be working
go in the trunk and remove the cover plate pull the outlet line and have someone crank it over to see if you are geting fuel out of it
